Lockport’s Lincoln Landing is one of the places we can visit to celebrate Abraham Lincoln. While Lincoln Landing gives us a new perspective into his life and work, it is not the only location that expands on the conversation about Lincoln.
President Lincoln’s Cottage is located in Northwest Washington D.C., where it not only served as a home for soldiers, but also Lincoln’s residence for over a quarter of his presidency. While staying there, he was able to visit with wounded soldiers and experience first hand the effects of the Civil War. Although the cottage served as a reprieve for Lincoln and his family, it did not allow an escape from the issues plaguing the nation. During his time at the Cottage, Lincoln drafted the Emancipation Proclamation.

In addition to the fascinating history of this location, Lincoln’s Cottage expands on Lincoln’s legacy by tying his work to current issues; including an exhibit on immigration and an educational program that raises awareness about modern day slavery. Erin Carlson Mast, the CEO and Executive Director of Lincoln’s Cottage, recently visited the Gaylord Building Historic Site to expand upon the significance of this location to both current and historic issues. There are also plans to have a model of the Lincoln in Three Poses statue on display at Lincoln’s Cottage.
While Lincoln Landing and Lincoln’s Cottage both focus on different aspects of Lincoln’s life and work, each allows for new perspectives and conversations about Lincoln.
